TEEN PREGNANCY FACTS = REASONS TO WAIT

Note: For all of the teen moms reading this blog post, please don’t be discouraged!  You’ll just have to work hard to make sure that these facts don’t apply to you.  Although it will be challenging, I know that you can do it!  For all of the teenagers who are not mothers, please keep these facts in mind before having sex or trying to get pregnant.

  1. A BABY WON’T MAKE HIM STAY:
  • There is a chance he could have a new girlfriend by the time your baby is born.
  • 8 out of 10 teen dads don’t marry the mother of their child. . . AND, they pay an average of less than $800 each YEAR for child support!  That’s not even close to covering how much you will have to spend as a mother.
  1. IT’S TOUGH TO GET AN EDUCATION:
  • It’s hard to go to school all day after you’ve been up with a crying baby all night.
  • Teen pregnancy is the number one reason why teen girls drop out of school.
  • More than 50% of teen mothers never graduate from high school.
  • Only about 1% of teen moms will earn a college degree before turning 30.
  • 25% of teen moms have a second child within 24 months.
  1.  KIDS MESS UP YOUR BANK ACCOUNT:
  • It’s expensive to raise a child.  On average, it costs nearly a quarter of a million dollars to raise a child- and that does not include the cost of college.
  • More than half of all mothers on welfare had their first child as a teenager.
  • Two-thirds of families started by a young, unmarried mother are poor.
  1.  IT’S TOUGH ON YOUR KIDS:
  • Overall, kids of a teenage mom have a harder life than their peers. . . so the cycle continues.
  • Your kids are less likely to finish high school.
  • Your daughters are more likely to become teenage mothers themselves.
  • Your sons are two times more likely to end up in prison.
  • Children who live apart from their fathers are five times as likely to be very poor (when compared to children with both parents at home).
